Adding an Alert Location
Once installed, select "Menu", "Edit Locations...", and "New". Use your current location or input a street address directly or using your Address Book by selecting the "Contacts" button. When finished select "Save".
Note: the "current location" option makes use of your device's GPS capabilities which works best when you have a line of sight to the sky vs. inside a building. The "street address" option will resolve the street address to a GPS location by accessing the internet through your data plan or WiFi connection. If you do not have a data plan or WiFi connection, you can only use the "current location" option so you will want to remember to save these locations along the way.
Note: this option is not available, if GPS is not available.
Adding a Task or Appointment
-
Select "Menu" and scroll to "New Task..." for to-do items or "New Appointment..." for specifically scheduled meetings, appointments, etc. that are time dependent.
-
Give the task or appointment a name like "Stop at Grocery Store" or "Dentist Appointment".
-
For tasks, add task details to the "Details" section or for more complex tasks with multiple steps/components, try "Add Subtask..."
-
For appointments, add details to the "Details" section or for appointments with specific agendas, try "Add Agenda Item..."
-
Select "Due Date", if you would like to complete the task by a certain day, enter the due date and select whether and when you would like to be reminded (e.g., 1 day before, 3 days before, etc.)
-
Select "Alert if Near" and use your trackball/wheel to select from a list of previously saved locations. When you are in proximity to that location, an alert will pop-up on your phone's screen reminding you of the task. Note: this option is not available, if GPS is not available.
Synchronization with BlackBerry Applications & Google Calendar

Note that got-2 automatically synchronizes with your BlackBerry "Calendar" and "Tasks" tool. Therefore if you have associated your BlackBerry Calendar with for example your Google Calendar, those appointments will automatically be kept in sync. If you create an Appointment on your Google Calendar, you will see it in got-2 the next time your BlackBerry synchronizes with your Google account (or manually by selecting the Google Sync icon on your BlackBerry). Also note that if you create agenda/subtask items with dash "-" characters on separate lines within a calendar/task item description/note field, those will automatically be synchronized with got-2 as agenda/subtask items in the appointment/task.
Note that got-2 appointments default length are one hour. If you schedule a length in Google Calendar different than one hour and later edit that appointment in got-2, the length in your Calendar will be changed to one hour on the next Google Sync.
got-2 Implementation Notes
-
got-2 makes use of the core GPS services on your BlackBerry to know when proximity to a previously saved Task location should be alerted. When the core GPS service on the device cannot establish a GPS fix for a while (e.g., you're inside a building), got-2 puts the GPS monitoring task in sleep mode. got-2 will wake up periodically to see if the core GPS service can fix on a location, if not, got-2 resumes the sleep state. There may be a gap between when got-2 "wakes-up" and when you are temporarily in proximity to an alert location (e.g., you just left the building). We hope to tune this timer in future revisions.
-
got-2 also suspends communication with the core GPS service if it detects the device battery is low. This prevents got-2 from draining a low battery.
-
Also note the got-2 GPS location associated with a task is stored only on the phone, it is not sent to gWhiz or any other third party.
-
got-2 Tasks with a date are stored as BlackBerry Calendar items - This allows synchronization with Google calendar which currently does not support synchronization of Todo items. got-2 Tasks without a date are stored as BlackBerry ToDo items.
-
Users with multiple calendars or older calendar events may not see those events in got-2. All newer events will appear as expected.
-
A device that does not have access to GPS (like an older BlackBerry 8700) or has GPS turned off, will report to got-2 that the device has GPS permanently unavailable. In that case got-2 does not display the "Edit Locations..." menu item or the "Alert location" checkbox.
-
Google Maps integration: If Google Maps version 2.2 or later is installed on the device, it will be used to a) verify street location addresses and b) show the results of a location alert. If Google maps is not installed or is an older version, BlackBerry maps will be used to confirm the street location address. BlackBerry maps are not used for the results of a location alert.
-
BlackBerry Content Protection. If you have Content Protection enabled at the strongest level in your General Settings, you may have items on your calendar display in got-2 with the title "<Content Protection is enabled>".
