BlackBerry FAQ:
We're looking for recurring themes to add to this Frequently Asked Questions
list. If you have questions, please email us at
info@gWhizMobile.com.
Thanks!
GENERAL
1) What BlackBerry phone models do you support?
We currently support phones running the 4.2, 4.3, and 4.5 operating
systems. This includes the Pearl, Curve, and World Edition phones.
However, there are some phones at these OS levels that do not have a separate
"MENU" key, e.g., the 8700. For these phones, simultaneously press the
"ALT" and trackwheel to see the menu options.
If you are having trouble running the application, please send an email to
info@gWhizMobile.com. Please include your phone model number, operating
system, service provider name, and also let us know whether you're running
BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
2) I cannot get to menu items on my 8700 (non trackball) BlackBerry.
Clicking on the trackwheel does not bring up the menu.
For non-trackball BlackBerry's, menus can be activated using ALT+Trackwheel
click.
3) When attempting to install the application, I get a "module
net_rim_xml_org not found" error.
There are a few customers that have reported this installation error.
Because it happens infrequently, we have not yet isolated what
combination of device, OS level, and service provider create this
problem. However, we have seen the issue resolved after installing the
suite of Google Mobile Applications on the device (Google Maps, Documents,
Sync) directly from the Google site.
4) When I first run the application I received several "Accept or Deny"
prompts, what are those about?
The device operating system has capabilities very similar to firewall
software on a desktop computer. The device is essentially asking you
whether it is ok to allow the connectivity or services the application has
requested. In the case of the gWhiz application, the first time you
run the application you may be asked to allow access to gWhizMobile (where
the "Help" page is hosted), Google Documents (to download learning content
from the gWhiz Catalog or your Google Documents account), AdMob or Google
AdSense (our providers of advertising content), and if using got-2 you'll be
asked to allow access to the device's GPS information (which allows you to
build a list of saved locations on your device for task alerts). You
will not have to check these boxes on subsequent uses of the
application. However, if you do not allow access on the first use,
certain capabilities of the application will not work. On the
BlackBerry, you can edit application permissions through "Tools", "Advanced
Options", "Applications", scroll to the appropriate application and select
the "Menu" key.
5) Your Terms & Conditions (T&C) refer to collecting
information from my phone. What is that for?
As with other web based applications, we're collecting phone and operating
system version so we know what devices are successfully running the
application. This helps us isolate issues and support users that are
having trouble. We are only focused on our application and do not know
anything about other applications on a device. Our Terms and
Conditions do say we may use GPS information. We're not
actually doing that now but we've prototyped an application that uses GPS
information to better support task management and study groups. You
can see a demonstration of this on our website on the "Demo" page titled
"Android Demo". This application on your phone only uses GPS locally
on the device and does not transmit it or share it in any way. You
may also notice these T&Cs are very similar to those of other mobile
application providers such as Google, Yahoo, and Apple.
gFlash+ and gRef
1) The pre-installed flashcards or reference guides work fine, but I can't
load additional data sets from either my Gmail account or the gWhiz Catalog.
We have noticed this on phones in weak/intermittent data coverage areas.
The capability is restored when in an area better covered by their wireless
service provider.
We have also noticed this symptom on phones previously configured with
BlackBerry Enterprise Service now running BlackBerry Internet Service.
Some customers have successfully added cardsets after backing up their device
and wiping it clean (i.e., Security Options, General Settings, press the MENU
key, select Wipe Handheld). Again, this is recommended only after
confirming you have completed a full back up of your device. Please see
the User Guide for your phone at www.blackberry.com for details.
2) Does gFlash+ and gRef support international language characters such as
those found in the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean languages?
Both the gWhiz applications and Google Documents support international
characters. Unfortunately a particular device may not be
able to properly display them and that depends on both the model of the
device and the service provider. There are a number of threads on
CrackBerry or Pinstack that may be able to help with a particular
device/service. Some customers have had success configuring their
phone for international languages and you will find several sets of Korean
language flashcards a customer contributed to the gWhiz Catalog.
The only other way to accomplish this would be by using the image capability
within gFlash and gRef. Either column A or B in the gWhiz template can
include urls to .png files hosted on the Internet. There are several
examples of image content in the gWhiz Catalog you can use as a reference
(Boating Lights at Night, Dog Breeds, Sign Language).
3) Can I create flashcards that include images?
Yes, there are a couple of examples of image flashcards in the gWhiz
Catalog. Perform a search in the catalog for Dog Breeds, Guitar
Chords, or Boating Lights at Night and you'll see some image flashcards.
They are more difficult to create than normal text based flashcards.
You will need to host the images somewhere on the internet (e.g., a
picture sharing service or personal web page) and then call them
in the spreadsheet so they display on the phone.
In the dog breed example, using the gWhizTemplate, Column A "calls"
the url's where the picture files (".jpg") are stored, and
Column B includes the associated name of the dog. On the phone, when
the card is queued for display, the url is accessed via your phone's data
plan or wifi connection and displayed on the phone. Because they're
called in real-time, small image files work best.
The "Question" or the picture of dog in column A is represented by the
URL:
http://www.gwhizmobile.com/gRefimages/250px-American_Bulldog_600.jpg
And the "Answer" or the title of the dog is in column B: American Bulldog

gCalc!
1) Does gCalc support an equation for a circle, e.g., x^2 + y^2 = r^2?
Currently gCalc supports equations with one independent variable of the
form y=mx+b, y=ax^2+bx+c, y=sin(x), etc. However, we are using
customer feedback to define the requirements for the future releases so
please let us know what you would like to see next.
2) Sometimes when performing a simple math calculation with one or two
decimal places I get a result that has not been rounded correctly and
instead displays a long string of 9's after the decimal (e.g. 4.1 - 2.1 =
1.9999999999999999999).
We believe this is an issue with how the core BlackBerry OS performs certain
mathematical functions and are developing a workaround.
